Maret
That was fucking terrifying. I never knew things like that could get through the walls.
Overview
Maret is a half-elf mother in her early thirties whose daughter Sable has begun to exhibit innate, uncontrollable magic. She has been hiding Sable for the better part of a year. The strain has worn her down. As of Session 01, she has agreed to be moved by the Resistance to a safehouse in Heron run by Orvin.
Appearance
Half-elf features, softened by age and tiredness. Hair drenched and lank by the time the party met her in Wickward. Boots failed somewhere along the journey. Clothes practical, never fine. She does not wear jewelry — anything she had has been sold to pay for hiding Sable.
Her face was built for laughter, and has not been asked to do much of that work lately.
Personality
Composed under pressure, in the way that mothers of dangerous children become composed. She is tired. She is afraid. She has gotten very good at not allowing either to show in front of Sable.
She is observant. She noticed instantly when the party began casting spells inside Edra's back room and was visibly alarmed; the casual use of magic is exactly what she has spent the last year teaching her daughter not to do. The party's competence reassured her without ever quite making her comfortable.
She has hope, and she is used to having hope, and she is equally used to having it dashed. She nods her thanks when she cannot find the words.
Role in Session 01
- Brought to the soap maker's shop by Thresh.
- Met the party. Quietly skeptical at first, then warmed when Vivienne crouched to Sable's level.
- Rode Argentus with her daughter for the entire journey from Wickward to Heron.
- During the Ash Walker fight, sheltered Sable. After Sable detonated her wild Fireball, held her without speaking until the rain washed it off.
- Delivered safely to Orvin's repair shop in Heron. Was eating soup at the back-room table when the Inquisition arrived.
What She Knows
- That her daughter's magic is dangerous and getting worse.
- That the Inquisition is closer than she has admitted to anyone.
- That she has run out of safe places. Orvin's is the last option she has.
- That if the safehouse fails, she does not have a plan after.
Relationships
- Sable — Her daughter. The center of her world. The reason for every choice in this story.
- Sable's father — Unmentioned. Status unknown.
- Vivienne Ashworth — Treats Vivienne with a respectful warmth that has hardened into trust by the time they reach Heron.
- The Resistance — Beneficiary, not member. They have been moving her for some time.
- Orvin — Her host. Did not know him personally until tonight.
Status
At Orvin's safehouse, Heron, as the Inquisition begins canton quarantine.
