Rimalath

At its heart the castle of the immortal king. Rimalath. God-King. Maker of walls. He has ruled for longer than history bothers to record. His elven blood granting him what the priests call divine continuance. A life without end, a reign without interruption.

Overview

Rimalath is the immortal elf-king of Caligo. He has ruled for so long that history does not record the beginning of his reign. The state priesthood calls his longevity divine continuance. His statues stand in every square. His prayers are spoken every morning in every school, every garrison barracks, every canton.

He is credited with the building of the three walls. He is therefore credited with the survival of every life behind them. The covenant of his rule is binding by virtue of this debt: he gave us the walls; we give him our gratitude.

What Is Known

  • Elf. His race is the cited mechanism of his longevity, though the priesthood is careful not to commit to a specific theology of how his lifespan exceeds elven norms.
  • In the capital. He resides behind the innermost wall, in a castle that is publicly visible from much of the city but not approachable.
  • Sole authority. All Regime action is conducted in his name. The Inquisition, the Garrison, and the priesthood all derive authority from him directly.
  • Rarely seen. Public appearances are infrequent and tightly controlled. Most citizens have never seen him in person.

What Is Suspected

  • That he is not what he claims to be. Whispered by every part of the Resistance that has thought about it long enough to risk thinking it out loud.
  • That the walls are not what he claims they are. That they are a cage rather than salvation; that the kaiju are not the only reason for them.
  • That his "divine continuance" has a mechanism, and that the mechanism has a cost paid by someone other than him. Harland Ashworth came closest to formalizing this theory and disappeared while writing it down.

What Is Heretical to Ask

  • Why are the kaiju drawn to Caligo specifically?
  • What does the Inquisition do with the people it takes?
  • What happens to a canton after quarantine?
  • How long, exactly, has Rimalath ruled — and what was here before him?

Status

On the throne. Has been on the throne for living memory. Shows no sign of being anything other than on the throne for the foreseeable future.
